Mountain hazards

Mountain weather hazards

Hazards apply at or above 300m, reflecting the more severe conditions which can occur at altitude.

hazard Strong Sunlight
Harmful UV levels from sunlight increase with altitude giving a greater risk of sunburn and eye damage, even on some overcast days. On breezy days, the cooling effect of wind on exposed skin may disguise any feeling of sunburn until it is too late. If there is snow cover, glare increases the effect of UV rays especially on the eyes. It is advisable to wear sun block, protective clothing such as a long-sleeved top and hat and have good quality eye protection.

hazard Thunderstorms
Lightning is a significant mountain hazard which can result in serious injury or death. Mountain terrain often leaves one highly exposed to lightning strikes. Hail may give unpleasant conditions with torrential rain and localised flash flooding also possible, mainly in Summer months.

Mountain weather forecast

A fine start but scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms, perhaps severe, likely to develop into the afternoon and evening.

Additional weather information

Meteorologist's view

Plenty of drinking water and appropriate sun protection will be required. Any thunderstorms that develop could include frequent lightning, large hail and strong gusty winds, along with localised downpours.

Weather

Dry with clear skies overnight. Likely fine start with sunny spells but very quickly turning hot and humid. Heavy showers and possibly some severe thunderstorms then developing later in the afternoon and evening. These could include frequent lightning, large hail and strong gusty winds. Any heavy showers and thunderstorms gradually clearing north-eastwards after dusk.

Chance of cloud-free hill tops

90% or more for most of the day, perhaps briefly reducing to 80% during the afternoon and evening in any thunderstorms.

Low cloud and visibility

Cloud could briefly obscure some tops above 500m in heavy showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening, but otherwise the summits should be cloud-free. Generally very good visibility, but poor or very poor in any heavy showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.
